News Touring Experiments
Short loops excerpted from the 30 minute single channel video made in 1996 entitled Cable on Cable, which was screened at several festivals and on 11 public access TV stations. These loops were used in various performances and shown on node for many years.

The source footage for Cable on Cable was recorded within two hours from Time Warner Cable TV in Troy, NY. The soft-focused camera looks on as I deliberately flipped channels to find interesting juxtapositions of both image and sound. I wanted to take this idea to a further level, and so in a single edit, I took the second half of the recording, layering it upon the first, allowing parts of each to be hidden and revealed. The sound, was left intact, and there was no intentional editing of any individual parts.

It was important for me to discover what kind of synchronicity could be synthesized by such a process-- some areas of the soundtrack slip into obscurity and noise, while others give us poignant glimpses of our culture by combining (seemingly) unrelated phrases and bytes.

The result that I did not anticipate from this process was the tension between the image and sound. The image is relentlessly beautiful and abstract, while the sound keeps one grounded to the context of the piece. As one watches, one cannot help but try to identify and decipher the source and subject of the sound, and somehow pull meaning from it, while the image fights for your attention, and beckons you to forget any possible statement being made.
